Looking for the Sky
Romeo In The City

We arrived in Sheffield at 12.30 with Arsenal – Manchester Utd kicking off at 12.45. First we thought we’d got off at the wrong hotel but then found out they’d recently changed their name (Globeline Hotel instead of …). We were glad to see a sign outside saying they had a licensed bar and sky sport. At the reception the woman couldn’t find any record of our bookings though she said there were rooms available. But she needed to tidy them up before she could let us in. In the meantime I checked the lounge for sky sport. A guy/visitor (?) was on his phone with the TV on, tuned on some music station. I pointed to the remote control asking if I could change (he wasn’t watching after all) and, with his free hand he waved an unmistakable ‘don’t touch it’. Alright, then. Finally we asked if we could just leave our luggage in our rooms and come back later. We had 5 minutes before kick off and we knew we were about half an hour walk from the city centre but we were hoping we won’t have to go as far to find a pub with sky sport. Yeah right… The first pub advertised live sport but didn’t have sky anymore. When we asked the waitress if they were showing the footie (telly was on but we wanted to make sure before ordering our drinks) we first thought she was being sarcastic when she said they weren’t. But she was being serious. A sign outside the second pub said live sport + only home fans. We were neutral so went in. Turned out their sky had recently been stolen (!!) Finally, about 15 minutes after kick off, we found a pub (and a good one) showing the game… It was right in the city centre. The match was well worth the effort: a game with quality and drama in which Arsenal maintained their unbeaten run in the season by scoring in added time to level up (2-2).
