Meeting Hsiang
Filming Love Love Love
Saturday, 16 February 2008

While I was on tour with Romeo In The City, I met Poom in Sheffield. Poom is the producer on Love Love Love, a film by Hsiang-Heng Kung. We'd met to discuss my possible involvement in the film. Unfortunately Hsiang couldn't make it at the meeting, and although she and Poom came to see the show that evening, I still hadn't met her till today.

So, today, off I went, back to Sheffield, to meet Hsiang, Poom and Dita, the casting director. Hsiang is from Taiwan, Poom from Thailand and Dita is Indonesian. I'm the main focus of discussion, or, rather, Kevin, my character, is the main focus. Kevin is Ivorian. How does the Ivorian accent sound in English? How does the English accent of a French speaking African sound like? I'm a French speaking African and I don't think I sound like an Ivorian, or any other Rwandan speaking English, for that matter. I think it depends on the actual individual's background. The other day I heard a Nigerian speaking; his accent was nothing like a 'Nigerian' accent. My belief is that you can always tell an African accent (by the rhythm,...), you can probably always go as much as pointing out whether it's Western, Southern or East and Central African, but for the untrained ear, it's harder to distinguish a country from the accent. Highly educated African have a different accent. Those from French speaking countries will again have a different accent. Kevin is educated and from a French speaking background, his accent could be anything in that spectrum.
