How does a three-year-old get affected by a tragedy like a war, fleeing one's country and the loss of both parents? How much is a seventeen year old affected by what he/she experienced when (s)he was three?
When I'll find the answers to those questions, I would have found Omar. It wouldn't be a problem for me if it all had happened when Omar was seventeen, and he'd be older now. But now I'm wondering: is 'three-year-old' too young or old enough to have your future life affected by a tragedy? After numerous days of rehearsals I decided Omar's history had had an influence on his current personality as a teenager. I looked at my own past, but also, for the sake of the play, Omar had to be a 'different' teenager. More mature, someone who had 'seen it all' at a very young age, someone capable of 'grown-up' behaviour (like Romeo and Juliette who married while they were early teenagers, against their parents' will). |
